Eid ul Adha 2026: Eid of Sacrifice and its Complete Information

Eid ul Adha 2026

Eid al-Adha, also commonly known as the “Eid of Sacrifice”, is one of the two most important festivals of the Islamic year. It is celebrated at the end of the Hajj and is intended to commemorate the great love and sacrifice of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) for Allah. This article will guide you through the preparations for Eid ul Adha 2026 and to understand its importance.

What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha is not just a holiday but the name of a major act of worship that comes after the main pillar of Hajj. “Adha” means sacrifice. While Eid al-Fitr is celebrated to celebrate the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, Eid al-Adha teaches us to sacrifice everything at the command of Allah.

The story of the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him)

The basis of this Eid is the incident of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) and his son Prophet Ismail (peace be upon him). Allah Almighty ordered Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son in a dream as a test. When Prophet Ibrahim (AS) intended to sacrifice his beloved son for the sake of Allah, Allah accepted his intention and sent a ram (sheep) in his place. Today, we remember this Sunnah and perform Qurbani (sacrifice).

Important dates of Eid ul Adha 2026

Islamic dates depend on the sighting of the moon. The expected dates for 2026 are:

  • Start of Dhul-Hijjah: Monday, May 18, 2026.

  • Start of Hajj: Monday, May 25, 2026.

  • Day of Arafah: Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

  • First day of Eid ul Adha 2026: Wednesday, May 27, 2026.

  • End of Eid: Friday, May 29, 2026.

Note: These dates may be one day ahead or behind depending on the sighting of the moon.

How many days are there for Eid?

Eid al-Adha is celebrated for three days (10, 11 and 12 of Dhul-Hijjah). The first day of Eid is the most festive when the Eid prayer is offered. The act of sacrifice can be performed from the first day of Eid ul Adha 2026 until sunset on the third day.

Method of sacrifice and distribution of meat

After the Eid prayer, prominent Muslims sacrifice animals (sheep, goats, cows or camels) in the way of Allah. The purpose of sacrifice is not only to share the meat, but also to be pious. It is Sunnah to divide the sacrificial meat into three equal parts:

  • One part for one’s own family.

  • One part for relatives and friends.

  • One part for the poor and needy.

This way, it is ensured that everyone in society, whether poor or rich, can join in the joys of Eid.

Sunnahs (Sunnahs) on the day of Eid

It is Sunnah to do the following on the day of Eid:

  • Taking a bath: Taking a bath before the Eid prayer.

  • Wearing good clothes: Wear clean or new clothes.

  • Saying Takbirs: Reciting “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar…” out loud while going to the Eid Gah.

  • Delaying eating: Unlike Eid al-Fitr, it is better not to eat anything before the prayer on Eid al-Adha, so that the first meal is from the sacrificial meat.

How to pray Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha prayer is offered in congregation shortly after sunrise. It consists of two rak’ahs and additional takbirs are said in each rak’ah. After the prayer, the Imam gives a sermon, which is important to listen to and is a reward.

Differences between Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha

Although both Eids are occasions of joy, there are some differences between them:

  • Sadaqah: “Fitrana” is given on Eid al-Fitr, while an animal is “sacrificed” on Eid al-Adha.

  • Eating: It is Sunnah to eat sweets before the prayer on Eid al-Fitr, while it is Sunnah to eat sacrificial meat after the prayer on Eid al-Adha.

How to prepare for Eid ul Adha 2026?

  • Take care of the dates: Mark the dates of May 2026 on your calendar.

  • Arrangement for sacrifice: To avoid last-minute worries, arrange for the sacrificial animal or money for it in advance.

  • Fasting of Arafat: Fasting the day before Eid (9th Dhul-Hijjah) has great virtue, prepare for it.

Summary
