What is Qurbani?

Every year, when the days of Dhul-Hijjah come, the atmosphere of Muslim homes starts to change. The markets become crowded, children talk about animals, and preparations for Eid al-Adha begin in every home.

I still remember when I went to the animal market a few days before Eid. There were the sounds of goats everywhere, children were happily touching the animals, and adults were looking at good and healthy animals. Going there, it seemed like it was not just shopping but preparing for a special act of worship.

Qurbani is not just about slaughtering animals. It conveys the message of sacrificing one’s desires, pride, and love of the world for the sake of Allah. This act of worship contains love, faith, patience, and obedience to Allah.

Meaning of Qurbani in Islam

Qurbani comes from the Arabic word “qurb” which means to be close to Allah.

Qurbani in Islam means slaughtering animals for the sake of Allah during the days of Eid al-Adha. This act is performed in memory of the Sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS).

Allah tested Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and ordered him to sacrifice his son Hazrat Ismail (AS) in a dream. It was a great test. But Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and Hazrat Ismail (AS) both obeyed Allah’s command.

When Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) started to sacrifice his son, Allah sent a ram from Paradise in place of Hazrat Ismail (AS). In this memory, Muslims perform sacrifice every year.

Why do Muslims perform sacrifice?

There are several important purposes of sacrifice.

For the pleasure of Allah

Muslims perform sacrifice only to please Allah. Intention is very important in Islam.

Following the Sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS)

Sacrifice reminds us of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS).

The meat of the sacrifice is distributed to the poor and needy so that they too can join in the joy of Eid.

I have personally seen how happy the faces of poor children are when the sacrificial meat goes to their homes.

Allah says in the Holy Quran:

“Pray and sacrifice to your Lord.”

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also used to sacrifice every year and encouraged Muslims to do so.

Sacrifice brings Muslims closer to each other and increases love.

When is the sacrifice performed?

The sacrifice is performed on the day of Eid al-Adha.

This time begins after the Eid prayer on 10th Dhul-Hijjah and lasts until sunset on 12th Dhul-Hijjah.

No sacrifice is made before the Eid prayer.

Which animals are permissible for sacrifice?

Some animals are permissible for sacrifice in Islam.

The animal must be healthy. The sacrifice of a sick or very weak animal is not valid.

After the prayer, people sacrifice and then distribute the meat. The whole day is spent in happiness, love, and prayers.

It is not just a festival but a worship that strengthens faith.

There are many benefits of sacrifice.

Faith is strengthened

A person feels close to Allah.

People in need get food.

People share happiness with each other.

The Sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) is remembered.
