Halal Qurbani: What You Should Check Before Performing the Sacrifice

Eid al-Adha always brings a special joy and feeling. It is not just an ordinary festival, but a responsibility and worship are associated with it. A few days ago, when I went to the cattle market early in the morning, the atmosphere there was different. The ground was cool, the smell of fodder was in the air, and people were looking at the animals carefully everywhere.

Someone was discussing the price, while someone was silently checking the animal from head to toe.

At that moment, I realized that halal sacrifice is not just the name of buying an animal, but it is the name of performing worship with intention, caution, and the right way.

If you are also preparing for sacrifice, then this complete and easy guide is for you.

The Importance of Checking Before Sacrifice

First of all, it is important to understand why it is important to check the animal thoroughly.

Sacrifice is an act of worship, and it has some rules. If the animal does not meet these rules, the sacrifice is not valid.

I saw an old man in the market who was looking at a goat very carefully. He did not ask the price first, but first checked the animal thoroughly, saw its gait, and then spoke.

This is the real method. First check, then decide.

Check the Age of the Animal

The first thing you should look at is the age of the animal.

According to Islamic principles:

  • A goat or sheep should be at least one year old
  • A cow or buffalo should be at least two years old
  • A camel should be at least five years old

One important thing I learned for myself is not to just believe the seller.

Be sure to look at the animal’s teeth. Teeth give a good idea of age. If you do not understand yourself, take an experienced person with you.

Check the Health of the Animal

First, look at the animal from a short distance.

A healthy animal is alert, moving, and responsive to its surroundings. If the animal seems sluggish or weak, be cautious.

Then, get up close and look at:

  • The eyes should be clear and bright
  • The nose should be slightly moist, not too dry or runny
  • The skin should be clear, with no sores or disease
  • The breathing should be normal, not fast or heavy

I once liked a goat, but when I got up close, its breathing was a bit heavy. That’s why I didn’t buy it.

Be Sure to Check for Physical Defects

This is a very important step.

In Islam, it is not permissible to sacrifice an animal that has a clear defect, such as:

  • Blindness in one or both eyes
  • Lameness or inability to walk properly
  • A large part of an ear or tail is cut off
  • A horn is broken at the root
  • Extreme weakness or illness

These defects are not often seen in a standing animal, so be sure to walk it.

Check the Body Condition

The animal should not be too weak or sickly.

Place your hand on its back or side. If the bones are too prominent, the animal is weak.

A good animal is one that is balanced, not too thin or unhealthy.

I have seen experienced people always check the condition of the animal by touching it.

Check the Teeth and Mouth

Teeth do not only indicate age, but also indicate health.

Check whether the teeth are in good condition. There should be no sores, bad odor or swelling in the mouth.

A person in the market refused to take the animal only because its gums were not healthy.

Check the Eyes and Ears Carefully

The eyes should be clear and bright. A cloudy eye can be a sign of illness.

The ears should be complete. If they are too cropped, the animal is not suitable.

These may seem like small things, but they are very important.

Watch the Animal’s Gait and Behavior

The behavior of the animal tells a lot.

A healthy animal walks straight, is balanced, and responds to the environment.

Walk it and see:

  • Is it walking properly
  • Is it not limping in any way
  • Is it too slow or isolated

I once saw a goat standing alone and not moving. It seemed fine, but its behavior was not right.

Halal Qurbani

Be sure to ask the seller:

  • What has the animal been eating
  • How long has it been owned
  • Has it been treated or vaccinated

A reputable seller will tell you everything clearly.

The Animal Must Be Lawful and Legal

It is also very important that the animal was obtained legally.

Buying a stolen animal makes the sacrifice meaningless.

Always buy from a reputable and trustworthy seller.

Check the Pregnancy Status

If you are buying a female animal, make sure that she is not pregnant.

If in doubt, seek help from an experienced person or ask the seller clearly.

Also Keep an Eye on the Environment

The place where the animal is kept also tells a lot.

If the place is clean, the animals are getting the right food, then this is a good sign. But if the place is dirty and the animals seem weak, then be careful.

Don’t Rush

The biggest mistake is that people make decisions in a hurry.

The rush of the market, lack of time, and the excitement of Eid make people hurry. But one should not rush in the sacrifice.

Look at it calmly, compare, and then decide.

The Last Thing

Halal sacrifice is not just a name for performing an obligation. It is an act of intention, hard work, and sincerity.

When I returned from the market that dayOh, so I wasn’t just happy that I bought the animal, but also relieved that I made the right decision.

Every little thing counts. Every check is essential.

Keep your intentions clear, give it time, and decide wisely.

Because in the end, the real purpose of sacrifice is to please Allah.
